Family Guy Top Trumps Review
Great for the family
Family Guy is an American animated sitcom which follows the Griffin family, consisting of parents Peter and Lois, their children Meg, Chris, and Stewie, and their pet dog Brian. The show is well known for its cutaway gags, irreverent humour, and satirical take on American culture.
First off I have to admit that I have not been an avid watcher of Family Guy over the years, but whenever I have caught it on TV it is pretty amusing, to say the least. My awareness of the show started about ten years ago, when I worked with a guy who looked exactly like Peter Griffin. He had the same clothes, hair, and chin, just the voice was missing.
Oblivious to the resemblance, I used to talked to him on the daily and once my colleagues pointed this out I then had to look at him differently. Thinking about this now I never actually asked him, dude have you seen Family guy!!. This is really how I came to first watch it in the first place, and then I realised that this character is must be based on him, he must be due royalties surely!
Once I got my hands on the Family Guy Top Trumps set. I wondered if I’d recognize at least half of the characters. Thankfully, I did. However, I was taken aback to find that Peter Griffin was not the Top Trump card and I feel he’s been done a slight disservice with his score in this set, but throughout the character roster they all have relatable values which make sense. While I still have no clue about the meaning of the Qahog Fame category it doesn’t matter as I would expect the seasoned Family Guy fan to know.
The design of the cards do look rather plain. The yellow and blue colour scheme misses the mark for me. The bio’s are good, informative and detailed about each character’s role in the show, although the text is a bit small. Adding more humour would have been a nicer touch, given the comedic nature of Family Guy.
Game sessions typically last around 10 – 15 minutes, perfect for 3+ players. Playing the Family Guy set is enjoyable due to its characters and the need for tactical thinking. Simply calling the highest category won’t always work due to its varied balance. If you haven’t seen the series, playing this game might just pique your interest. I ended up watching a few more episodes after getting this set!
