South Park Top Trumps Review
“Screw you guys”
There is no question that South Park is, if not the best adult cartoon of all time and finally received a long overdue Trump card set in 2022. Upon ordering I was very excited and couldn’t wait to see it pop through my letterbox as I was so eager to see which characters have been included and how they match up.
Once I heard the postman put a package through my mailbox I knew it was here, I put my zoom call on mute, go downstairs and open it up. Upon opening there was an instant joy with how superb the cards looked but also mixed with utter disappointment and distain for the category’s and numbers assigned to these characters.
My first irk was that South Park is an ongoing show, why would you have 3 categories that take a snapshot in time, if you play this game well into the future these stats don’t add up.
Secondly 2 of those 3 categories, (Lines and Appearances) are worthless to be used as you would have far more chance of winning a hand using Fan Favourite or Top Trump Rating as if you have more lines, you are higher in these categories anyway, and may beat some of the higher cards in doing so.
Finally on the negative side is the biggest issue which is its balance. Cartman is unbeatable, the only way he can loose is if you use Bleeps as a negative, in doing so you make much of the weaker cards strong when calling against the top cards as most of the lesser rarely featured characters have low bleeps. So it means that you are only going to say Bleeps when calling to have a chance of winning.
It is still fun to play as the characters do make it fun, but even with the ratings some are baffling with the scoring, such as Towelie being a fan favourite, higher than a lot of main characters when this is one of the worst characters to have been in South Park, then you have Mr Hankey with a way to low a stat (Who is more memorable Towelie or My Hankey, the famous Christmas poo) There is also no Chef, Tuong Lu Kim from City Wok and detective Harris included but there are kids, that barely feature in the show instead.
The fact file from each card states a famous quote of theirs and nothing else, which is also a big let down and sight of lazy production. At least 3 quotes would have been nice, It gives off the impression the team behind creating this set had no real affection for the show judging by the categories and numbers attributed, which will taint this decks legacy despite its mass appeal.
