Flash Gordon’s adventures begin in the 1936 serial, where Earth faces destruction as the rogue planet Mongo hurtles toward it. Flash, Dale Arden, and Dr. Hans Zarkov travel by rocket to Mongo to stop the catastrophe. Once there, they are captured by Ming the Merciless, who desires Dale and sends Flash into arena battles. Flash encounters the kingdoms of the Lion Men, Shark Men, and Hawk Men, forming alliances with Prince Barin and King Vultan. Through a series of escapes, battles, and shifting loyalties, Flash unites Mongo’s factions against Ming’s tyranny.

The second serial, Flash Gordon’s Trip to Mars (1938), follows Flash, Dale, and Zarkov as they investigate a destructive “Nitron Ray” affecting Earth. Their search leads them not to Mongo but to Mars, where Ming has allied with Queen Azura, ruler of the Blue Magic People. Flash battles Azura’s forces and encounters the Clay People, victims of her magical curse. As Flash works to free them and stop the Nitron Ray, Ming attempts to regain power after his earlier defeat. Though Flash ultimately breaks Azura’s spell and ends the threat to Earth, Ming escapes once again, setting up the next chapter in the saga.

The final serial, Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe (1940), begins with Earth ravaged by the deadly Purple Death plague. Flash and Zarkov discover that Ming is behind the epidemic, using his ships to spread “Death Dust” across the planet. Their quest for an antidote takes them back to Mongo, where they travel through icy Frigia, forest realms, and Ming’s rebuilt strongholds. Alongside Dale and their allies, Flash battles Ming’s forces while Zarkov works with Earth scientists to counter the plague.

The story concludes with Flash destroying Ming’s power bases and thwarting his final attempt to conquer Earth. Ming is seemingly killed in an explosion, bringing closure to the trilogy’s long struggle against his tyranny. Across the three serials, Flash evolves from an accidental space traveller into a unifying hero who repeatedly saves both Earth and Mongo from destruction, cementing the serials’ reputation as some of the most influential and popular adventure films of their era.
